Separating children from parents. Prolonged detention in jail-like conditions. Court proceedings without legal representation or interpreters. This is not how America should be treating people fleeing violence and persecution who are seeking our help. Learn about the current state of the U.S. asylum system and how HIAS is stepping up to help and protect asylum seekers and their families. Asylum is not a loophole. Since World War II, asylum has been a right that is enshrined in U.S. and international law. HIAS is extremely concerned about the recent steps our government has taken to roll back critical protections and undermine what must remain a fair and humane process.
