What Workforce Development Professionals Need to Know About Mental Health

As workforce development professionals our primary charge is to help individuals thrive in their careers. We help them obtain gainful employment, discover work satisfaction, and more. Yet, the people we serve are complex human beings who bring life conditions with them that can affect their career persistence. Mental Health issues are frequently among the challenges our clients face. How well do workforce development professionals understand mental health and the ways this affects our clients? In what ways can we support those who are in mental health treatment? Do we have attitudes and misconceptions that affect how we interact with our clients? Are there approaches and techniques we can use to best serve individuals? This session is designed to help us be most prepared as we assist individuals who are navigating career, employment, and personal challenges as interrelated life tasks.

Guest Speaker: Shadin Atiyeh, PhD LPC NCC ACS CCC: Employment & Economic Empowerment Programs Director at Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County

Facilitator: Lisa August, Career Services Counselor, Jewish Family Services of WNY and Co-chair, Workforce Development Professionals NETGroup
