The Clinical Services Professionals Affinity Group is unique in that it evolved organically last April in Atlanta at NJHSA’s 2019 Annual Conference. It all began with four individuals at an optional group lunch. Since then, the group has held 4 zoom calls. Thus far, more than 65 mental health professionals have participated and the Network welcomes more. Some of the topics discussed so far have included telemental health, psychiatry, compensation practices, challenging clinical situations, and substance use. The group call on November 14th we surround ways to improve client outcomes and engagement with measurement-based care. Email Megan to join the group.
In early September the group successfully sponsored the Telemental Health Certification Training. More Than 30 NJHSA member agency professionals completed the 3-day online training course. They obtained 9.5 CEUs and learned how the use of technology can enhance their work in providing counseling services. Those present learned about the history of telemental health, and how to best determine which technology would work for their agencies. Additionally, the course explored the ethical guidelines in providing this telemental health and the legal ramifications inherent in the use of online therapy options, as well as, HIPAA compliance standards. On the third day of training, participants role played how to handle emergency management planning and how to screen for fit. Professionals learned that online therapists use a variety of mediums to communicate and meet with clients, providing the same standard of care as a traditional practice.
As the group moves forward, Chair Dr. Elaine Rotenberg is confident that it will continue to provide an arena in which the clinical/mental health services that are often so central to our agencies, can be talked about openly, with colleagues from around the country, who share similar challenges. It’s key to create a space where professionals can learn and create best practices in real time.
Elaine is looking forward to facilitating this evolving group and learning from all of those in the Network with expertise in this evolving field.
