“Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Employment Services – Lessons Learned on the Relationship Between Recovery and Obtaining & Succeeding in Employment” Session

Date: Tuesday, January 31st, 2023, 1:45 pm-2:30pm EST

Speakers: Maria Delgado, Program Manager, and Sam Cole, Employment Specialist, JEVS Human Services

This session will discuss how one employment program in Philadelphia, PA, that is dedicated to working with clients in recovery, found success through integrating employment and MAT services, identifying and partnering with the client’s treatment team, developing community partnerships to place clients in “right fit” and meaningful jobs, connecting to necessary community resources to succeed in employment such as mental health, and developed and refined strategies to combat stigma in the community and the workplace.

About Maria:

Maria Delgado has been a Program Manager at JEVS Human Services in Philadelphia, PA for over 15 years. For the last 3 years, she has supervised providing employment services and supports to clients with substance use disorder (SUD). This employment program provides vocational assessments, job readiness training, skills training connections, job placement and retention supports. In addition to delivering robust employment services, JEVS’ provides technical assistance to employers who are open to hiring and employing people in recovery and has built a large network of employers who have adopted recovery-friendly policies, become open accommodations, and hiring practices. Maria graduated from Temple University in 1998 with a BA in Psychology. She enjoys spending time with her two children and parents, taking family field trips, and focusing on her spirituality, which transcends into helping and caring for others.

About Sam:

Samuel Cole is an Employment Specialist with JEVS Human Services in Philadelphia, PA. Sam has over 15 years of experience providing employment services and supports and has spent the last 3 years championing employment services to people in recovery with substance use disorder (SUD). Sam has a passion for assisting clients successfully get through barriers to become self-sufficient employees while contributing to build a better life and community in which they live. Sam also believes that all things are possible when you put in the commitment and have the passion for what you set out to do. Sam is a graduate of “The University of The Arts” aka PCA. Sam enjoys photography, riding his motorcycle, music, playing his guitar, bass, martial arts, Philadelphia sports, and traveling with his family.
